Larry Hicks is a guitar maker from Castlewood, Virginia. Larry has made over 40 guitars and has had his instruments on display at the Heartwood Center in Abingdon, Albert Hash Memorial Festival and many other luthiers shows in the Blue Ridge.
Larry says, "I have enjoyed woodworking creativeness since I was very young. I especially enjoy crafting musical instruments and the custom sound each one makes. In 1999, my son, Travis, became interested in playing the guitar and began taking lessons from Wyatt Rice. At that time, I decided to handcraft Travis an acoustic guitar. Thirteen years and forty-four guitars later, my love for musical instrument making has grown. Mahogany, rosewood, maple, and walnut are among the woods that I have used in my guitars. Shawn Lane and Jason Burleson of the Blue Highway band; Jamie Dailey of Dailey and Vincent; and Martha Spencer of the Whitetop Mountain Band are among the musicians who own a Hicks Handcrafted Guitar."
Larry's father, Allen Hicks, is also a luthier, who builds mandolins. Larry's son, Travis, works with Larry in his shop in Castlewood, doing inlay work on guitars.
"I highly recommend Larry Hicks guitars; he is a wonderful person to work with and does great detail work! My guitar not only looks beautiful and unique, but sounds great and plays easy. Larry and his family are nice, humble folks, and really put care in their instrument making."
